GAA.ie Footballer of the Week nominations

Gary Brennan

Gary Brennan

It was a exciting weekend in the Football Championship as both Clare and Tipperary defied their underdog status to qualify for the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals. Clare had a convincing win over Roscommon, while Tipperary pipped Derry at the death in a see-saw battle at Kingspan Breffni Park.

Clare's was a consumate team-performance, but both Gary Brennan and Jamie Malone deserve special mention for their efforts and are joined on the nominations short-list for this week's Footballer of the Week by Tipperary's Conor Sweeney.

The voting process is simple: retweet the image of your chosen player on the GAA's official Twitter account (@officialgaa) or like their image on the GAA's official Facebook and Instagram pages. Voting will close at 1pm on Tuesday, July 26 and the winner will be announced on GAA.ie.

Footballer of the Week nominations

Gary Brennan - Clare

Clare's midfield collosus has been one of the players of the Championship so far and was inspirational yet again for Clare in their stirring All-Ireland Qualifier win over Roscommon on Saturday.

Time and again it was Brennan who drove Clare forward with his ball-winning ability and surging runs. Roscommon simply couldn't cope with vibrant physicality in the middle third.

What sets Brennan apart is that when he does charge forward with the ball he usually does something really clever with it. His distribution was top class, he played a key role in Clare's first goal, and he scored a nice point from play too.

Conor Sweeney

Conor Sweeney - Tipperary

Tipperary attacker Conor Sweeny has a wand of a left foot and he used it to magical effect in Saturday's Round 4A Qualifier victory over Derry.

The Ballyporeen man scored five classy points from play and was Tipperary's hero in the closing minutes when he scored the late equaliser and then the winner that qualified the Premier County for the All-Ireland Quarter-Final.

By his own admission Sweeney had been having a quiet championship until the win over Derry. He'll surely now be primed for another big performance against Galway in the All-Ireland Quarter-Final.

Jamie Malone

Jamie Malone

Jamie Malone - Clare

One of Jamie Malone's most striking characteristics is that he plays the game with no fear. As soon as he gets the ball in his hands, he's immediately looking to take on the opposition defence and make something happen.

He's hugely athletic and when he opens his legs there are few players that can match him for pace. Time and again he skint the Roscommon defence down the wing and had them running back desperately towards their own goal.

He's much more than just a ball-carrier though. He's been a consistent score-taker all year for Clare and on Saturday hit a goal and set up another one.
