Peter Acheson has all but closed the door on playing inter-county football for Tipperary again in 2017.
Captain of the Premier County team that reached this year’s All-Ireland semi-final, Acheson has since moved to Dubai for work.
He played alongside fellow Tipperary stars Connor Sweeney, Robbie Kiely, and Michael Quinlivan for the 2016 All-Stars yesterday, but doesn’t think he’ll share a dressing-room with them again for the foreseeable future.
“We have a contract signed for a year with the house and stuff,” said Acheson. “I can’t see myself going home in the next two years. It’s hard to put into words, it’s a great place out here. So, unless something goes wrong, I’d say we will be here for a couple of years anyway.”
That hasn’t stopped Tipperary manager Liam Kearns trying to change Acheson’s mind. Kearns is also manager of the 2016 All-Star team this year, and used the trip to Dubai as an opportunity to entice his captain home.
“He’s been on four or five times already,” admits Acheson. “We’ll talk tactics maybe in the new year but look I’m enjoying it out here so I don’t think I’ll go home anytime soon.”
Acheson believes Tipperary will do just fine without him in 2017.
“I think there 17 new faces, seven or eight from previous years who have come back in, and then another ten on top of that,” he said. “So that’s brilliant.”
“There is going to be competition for places, which maybe we didn’t have in recent years because people mightn’t have wanted to put in the effort. In fairness it is a lot of commitment.
"But now that we got to the semi-final everybody wants to be a part of it. Tipp football is on the up.”
