UCD booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup on Tuesday evening with victory over Maynooth University.

They join IT Carlow, WIT, Mary I, UL, LIT, CIT and GMIT in the last eight, those seven having qualified earlier.

INDEPENDENT.IE FITZGIBBON CUP GROUP A: UCD 1-13 Maynooth University 0-10

UCD made heavy weather of it against Maynooth University this evening before finally seeing off dogged opponents to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup.

The Nicky-English managed side will face IT Carlow away from home next week knowing a much-improved performance is required.

Perhaps complacency was an issue as UCD were aware that LIT had beaten UCC earlier in the day, while Maynooth had fallen to heavy defeats in their previous two games.

But a Paul Winters-led Maynooth gave UCD plenty of it in icy Belfield, even though they were 0-2 to 1-7 down at half-time.

Maynooth cut the deficit back to three points during the second half before UCD managed to get the job done.

Ciaran Prendergast’s first half goal proved crucial for the winners and James Maher was excellent, providing four points from play.

Dublin pair DCU and Patrick's-Mater Dei played out a thrilling draw in their final group game of the Fitzgibbon Cup on Tuesday evening. However, the result was immaterial as both had already been eliminated before today's play.

In the other game in Group B, IT Carlow defeated WIT to top the group. Both sides had already qualified prior to this evening's encounter.
