LAOIS 2-16 OFFALY 1-16

Eddie Brennan got his Laois hurling management reign off to a winning start with an impressive three-point victory over border rivals Offaly in the Walsh Cup today.

Trailing by 1-8 to 0-8 at half-time, Laois were given an early second-half tonic when the sharp looking Stephen 'Picky' Maher struck for a goal.

Offaly reasserted themselves to move three points ahead again but where then rocked in the 57th minute when Laois debutant Aaron Bergin struck for a goal that levelled the scores at 2-11 to 1-14.

From there to the finish Portlaoise were the better team with PJ Scully in particular keeping the scoreboard ticking over as they pulled away from Offaly for a three-point victory.

Meathwhile, goals from Robbie Greville and Aaron Kennedy helped Westmeath to a 2-22 to 1-7 victory over Wicklow in the Kehoe Cup as new manager Joe Quaid also got his reign off to a winning start.
