David Fitzgerald: 'It is great to get another day out'

By Cian O'Connell

David Fitzgerald says Clare's substitutes occupied leading roles in Saturday's All-Ireland SHC Semi-Final win over Kilkenny at Croke Park.

Clare struck six late points in a row to defeat Kilkenny with Fitzgerald encouraged about the manner in which the Banner seized control. "It was unbelievable to get over the line, it was in the melting pot for the last 10 or 15 to go," Fitzgerald remarked.

"In fairness, we emptied the bench, and every single one of the subs made a huge contribution.

"So, that was great. It is great to get another day out in two weeks time."

Fitzgerald, who clipped two important points from play for Clare, also highlighted crucial Eibhear Quilligan saves in the opening period. "At half-time we were very disappointed, Kilkenny were five up, and probably could have been 10 plus up," Fitzgerald reflected.

"They had a couple of goal opportunities, Eibhear made a couple of unbelievable saves that kept us in the game, thankfully.

"Looking from the stands, it wasn't noticeable, but the breeze was quite strong. So, that aided us in the second half a good bit."

Now Clare return to an All-Ireland SHC Final against Cork. "It will be huge, the first time now since 2013," he says.

"We still have a few bodies hanging around, some of the experienced lads, but for the younger lads it is going to be great.

"We look forward to it, but there is a lot to work on, we are under no illusions, we have a lot to do."
