Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final

DCU Dóchas Éireann 1-20 Mary Immaculate College 1-18

DCU resisted a late fightback from Mary Immaculate College to send the reigning champions tumbling out of this year’s Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup at the quarter-final stage.

The Dublin side were that bit better for most of the contest and got off to a very strong start thanks in no small part to energetic midfielder, Donal Shirley, who fired over three early points.

Another rising Offaly star, Sam Bourke, then struck a somewhat fortuitous goal for DCU when his long delivery somehow went all the way to the back of the Mary I net on 20 minutes to put six points between the teams.

The reigning champions hit back with a goal of their own seven minutes later when Fionn McDonagh struck the crossbar and batted the rebound to the back of the net.

DCU were in a good position at half-time leading by 1-13 to 1-9, but Mary I started the second-half strongly with points by Ronan Power, Jimmy Quilty, and Shane O’Brien.

DCU settled any jangling nerves with points from Shirley and Cathal Beirne and had enough of a buffer on the scoreboard to resist a late burst of Mary I scores.
