GAA President, Jarlath Burns, is the subject of this week's Electric Ireland 'GAA Minor Moments' podcast.
Electric Ireland, proud sponsor of the Electric Ireland Camogie Minor Championships and the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Championships, has today released Season Three, Episode Ten of the ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast, featuring former Armagh footballer and current GAA President, Jarlath Burns.
In this episode Jarlath reflects on his journey through life, growing up in Silverbridge and the influence that the GAA had on his upbringing. Jarlath speaks with great fondness of his early memories - following the Armagh team up and down the country with his family. After making his own debut for the Armagh U16 team, Jarlath reminisces about how special it was to put on the orange jersey that was so sacred to him growing up.
Jarlath goes on to speak about his most precious memory of scoring a goal in the first round of the Minor Championship against Fermanagh. Stressing the importance of the Minor Championships, Jarlath sees it as a place where lessons can be learned and applied to life both on and off the field. Jarlath also reflects on the mistakes he made in his own Minor career that helped him to make the challenging transition from underage to Senior.
Jarlath looks back at his own Ulster success in 1999 and the heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat for Armagh in the 2024 Ulster final. Although not involved as a player in the 2002 All-Ireland victory, Jarlath highlights the impact that the members of this team continue to have on football in Armagh through coaching and player development structures.
With an all-Ulster clash in this weekend’s Electric Ireland All-Ireland Minor Football Final, Jarlath looks ahead to the game between Armagh and Derry - sharing his own thoughts on how to embrace the occasion on big days. Jarlath also speaks about what it is like to watch his own son Jarly Óg play for the Armagh Seniors and the part that parents play in the progression of their own children through minor and beyond.
As he moves through the first year as GAA President, Jarlath gives an insight into what a normal week looks like for him, the sense of enjoyment he gets from the role and the constant ‘sea of positivity’ that he experiences every day. Jarlath then goes on to speak about the identity of the GAA and its importance to the people on the island of Ireland, stressing that inclusion is at the heart of everything.
Electric Ireland’s ‘GAA Minor Moments’ Podcast airs on Tuesdays throughout the Electric Ireland Camogie & GAA Minor Championships as well-known Irish stars share memories from their early sporting careers, reflecting on the defining moments from playing Minor and how it shaped them, both on and off the pitch.
