Shane Horgan features in Season Three, Episode Nine of the ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast.
Electric Ireland, proud sponsor of the Electric Ireland Camogie Minor Championships and the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Championships, has today released Season Three, Episode Nine of the ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast, featuring former Meath Minor footballer and former Leinster and Ireland rugby player, Shane Horgan.
Looking back to his iconic try during the 2007 Six Nations in Croke Park, Horgan reflects on how both GAA and Rugby played a huge part in his upbringing and how special it was to score that try on GAA grounds. Hailing from Bellewstown in Co. Meath, Horgan played Gaelic football for his school and club growing up. From the fond memories of playing in Cumann na mBunscol to watching Meath winning the All-Ireland in 1997 and 1998, right up to playing minor with Meath, football continues to hold a special place in Horgan’s heart.
Coming to a crossroads in his career when he had interest from both the Meath U21 side and from the Leinster Rugby senior team, Horgan speaks about the decisions he had to make as he went down the professional sporting route. Horgan gives insight into the professional rugby organisations at the time in Ireland compared to now, exploring their development over the years.
Shane’s Dad, John was a hugely influential person in his sporting career. Hailing from New Zealand and being a massive fan of the Lions, it was a truly special moment for the Horgan family when Shane was selected for the 2005 Lions Tour. Shane reminisces on the fun and sense of occasion of the tour. While he didn’t see a huge amount of game time, he said to experience something like that was incredible.
Speaking on playing a number of sports growing up and reminiscing on his own Minor Moments, Shane also offers his advice to any young minors coming up the ranks to not be afraid to fully commit, that the moments of success are the best and you’ll never regret the sacrifices.
Electric Ireland’s ‘GAA Minor Moments’ Podcast airs on Tuesdays throughout the Electric Ireland Camogie & GAA Minor Championships as well-known Irish stars share memories from their early sporting careers, reflecting on the defining moments from playing Minor and how it shaped them, both on and off the pitch.
So far, Season Three has seen a fantastic line up of guests such as Kilkenny Camogie legend, Ann Downey, former Tipperary player and author Eimear Ryan, former Antrim Camogie Captain Jane Adams, current Head Coach of Team USA Boxing, Billy Walsh, Dublin Legend Alan Brogan, former Kilkenny hurler Richie Hogan, former Clare hurler Tony Griffin as well as Former Waterford hurler and manager, Derek McGrath. The final episode of Season Three will be available to listen to next week, wrapping up a season of excellent stories and minor memories.
