Cork v Monaghan

A great start laid the platform for Cork to get their first Allianz Football League Division I win since the opening day as they saw off Monaghan at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday afternoon.
By the time Conor McManus opened Monaghan’s account in the 11th minute, Cork had 1-5 on the board, the goal coming from Colm O’Neill on seven after Peter Kelleher had laid off Paul Kerrigan’s delivery. Cork continued to pick off their scores – they had 11 different players kicking points over the course of the game – and they were 1-10 to 0-3 after Mark Collins’ in the 29th minute.
However, Monaghan got a lifeline when corner-back Ryan Wylie was fouled after a foray forward. McManus showed quick thinking to find Conor McCarthy from the free and he finished from close range.
Darren Hughes got a long-range point in the wake of that and then McManus added two fine scores and, all of a sudden, there were just four points between the teams, Cork ahead by 1-10 to 1-6.
The hosts didn’t panic, though, and Collins and O’Neill scored to give them breathing space at half-time and the lead was extended to eight when Colm O’Driscoll and O’Neill pointed upon the resumption.
It was to prove too big a margin for Monaghan to overhaul as any points they got were answered by the hosts. Peadar Healy’s side had points from Kevin Crowley, Kevin O’Driscoll and subs Daniel Goulding and Dan Mac Eoin and seven points separated the teams by the end.
