Peter Acheson
Tipperary's Peter Acheson has come out on top by a razor-thin margin ahead of Donegal's Patrick McBrearty in the public vote for this week's GAA.ie Footballer of the Week.
The Premier County's Captain Fantastic gave an inspirational display of leadership as he drove Tipperary to a historic victory over Galway in Sunday's All-Ireland SFC Quarter-Final.
That feat helped him to 42 per cent of the public vote cast on the GAA's official Twitter (@officialgaa), Facebook, and Instagram pages and top the poll ahead of McBrearty and Kerry's Darran O'Sullivan.
GAA.ie Footballer of the Week
**1: **Peter Acheson - 5817 (42 per cent)
**2: **Patrick McBrearty - 5801 (42 per cent)
3: Darran O'Sullivan - 2169 (16 per cent)
Every Tipperary player was outstanding in their All-Ireland Quarter-Final win over Galway on Sunday, but team-captain Peter Acheson deserves special praise.
Going into the match most pundits predicted that Galway would have an edge in midfield, but instead they were obliterated there by Acheson and his right-hand man George Hannigan.
Acheson drove Tipperary forward time and again with his ability to carry the ball at pace and slalom past would-be tacklers. He defended like a demon too, his distribution was top-notch, and he even chipped in with a point.
Patrick McBrearty played his best game yet in a Donegal jersey in Saturday’s All-Ireland Qualifier victory over Cork, which is saying something considering his consistent excellence.
The Rebels simply couldn’t cope with his strength, speed, ball-winning ability, and accuracy as he scored 11 points, seven of them from play.
Many of those points were nothing less than spectacular as he nailed shots over his shoulder while running away from goal. McBrearty has been a Donegal senior since 2011, but only turns 23 this week and looks to be coming into his prime.
Kerry’s pocket-rocket Darran O’Sullivan has been in great form all year and produced another quality performance in Kerry’s convincing victory over Clare in Sunday’s All-Ireland SFC Quarter-Final.
He zipped all over the field to great effect and was the most dynamic player in the Kerry attack as he scored 1-2 from play.
The goal was a thing of beauty as he combined well with Paul Geaney and Stephen O’Brien before blasting a spectacular shot to the top right-hand corner of the net past helpless Clare goalkeeper Joe Hayes.
