Holders University of Galway survived a brave Maynooth University challenge in wretched weather conditions at Dangan as Maurice Sheridan's outfit prevailed on a 3-10 to 1-6 scoreline.
Early goals from Cathal Sweeney and Patrick O'Donnell mattered deeply as University of Galway survived a couple of scares at the opposite end of the field.
At half-time University of Galway led 2-4 to 0-2, but the spirited visitors remained defiant.
Maynooth narrowed the gap in the second period courtesy of a Darragh Kirwan goal.
University of Galway finished strongly, though, with a Tomo Culhane goal sealing the deal.

TU Dublin proved too strong for ATU Galway, emerging 1-13 to 0-9 winners at Grangegorman.
Level at half-time, 0-6 each, TU Dublin, prompted by a Kevin Callaghan goal, were sufficiently crafty to set up a Round 2A match against UL next week.
