Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton is set to make his 100th Championship appearance at Croke Park on Sunday.

By Gerry Callan

Here's a question: who was Dublin's joint second highest scorer in the successful All-Ireland winning campaign of half a dozen years ago?

It's not surprising to find that Bernard Brogan topped the list with 3-19 or even that Paul Mannion recorded 3-7, but it surely is a bit of a shock to find that the tally of the Kilmacud Crokes forward was matched by the 0-16 scored by ... goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton.

Cluxton, who scored six crucial points in the 1-16 to 0-14 win over Cork in the quarter-final and two equally important ones in the 2-12 to 1-14 victory over Mayo in the decider, has actually scored 48 points in the Championship, plus a further 18 in the National League.

However, he exceeds all those highly worthy contributions to Dublin's successes of recent years when he sets a truly historic first in the entire annals of the Association when he becomes the first player - in either code - to make 100 appearances in the Championship.

Cluxton, who was 17 years and 132 days old when he first wore the Dublin jersey, in a Leinster Minor Final replay win over Wexford in August 1999, was 19 years and 161 days old when he made his senior debut in a provincial quarter-final victory against Longford in May 2001 - and since then he has kept a remarkable 55 clean sheets.
