Longford Senior Hurling Final
Clonguish 2-14 Longford Slashers 1-14
Clonguish made it back to back Longford titles on Sunday with a battling victory over Longford Slashers, who they also beat in last year’s final.
The defending champions started the game on the front foot as points from Matthew Flynn, Bart Hanley, and Joe O’Brien gave them an early 0-3 to no-score lead.
But then Slashers hit their stride as Michael Mulcahy followed up a point with a goal to briefly gave his side the lead.
It took Clonguish just two minutes to hit back with a goal of their own through Stephn Gregg, who was quick to finish a rebound when Dan Crossan’s initial shot was save by Slashers ‘keeper Noel Dunne.
Then, on 23 minutes, Clonguish hit their second goal of the match when Bart Hanley finished to the net to give his team a 2-7 to 1-4 lead.
They were 2-10 to 1-5 ahead by the break and seemingly in control, but Slashers came roaring back in the second-half by hitting four early points in quick succession.
Reuben Murray scored two injury-time frees to reduce the deficit to one score, but 2021 champions Slashers couldn’t force the goal they needed to gain parity.
