Georgie Leahy
Legendary Kilkenny hurling coach, Sean 'Georgie' Leahy has passed away at the age of 78.
One of the most respected figures in Kilkenny hurling, 'Georgie' managed the James Stephens side that won the All-Ireland Club Senior Hurling Final in 1976.
In 1991 he also managed Glenmore to an All-Ireland senior club title, and over the course of a distinguised coaching career also worked with many other clubs such as Tullaroan, Galmoy, Mooncoin, Conahy Shamrocks, Barrow Rangers, and Castletown (Laois).
He was a selector with All-Ireland winning Kilkenny teams at senior, U-21, and minor level, and also worked with the Waterford, Wexford, Offaly, Laois, Westmeath, and Carlow county senior teams in a variety of roles.
“He was one of the greatest servants ever of Kilkenny hurling, and hurling in general,” said Kilkenny County Board chairman, Ned Quinn. “He was a very, very giving person who earned respect everywhere he went.
“Georgie worked with people at every level of the GAA, and he treated everyone with respect and always saw nothing but good in people.
“To his wife, Rita, and family we extend our deepest sympathy."
