Tailteann Cup draw throws up some interesting ties

The draw for the preliminary round and Round 1 of the inaugural Tailteann Cup took this morning.

The preliminary round matches will see Wexford play Offaly and Wicklow play Waterford with both games taking place this weekend.

Competing teams are assigned to Northern and Southern Sections and Home Venues shall be used for the Preliminary Round, Round 1 and Quarter-Final games, with the first team drawn having Home Advantage. The Semi-Finals and Final will be played in Croke Park.

SOUTHERN SECTION

May 21/22

Preliminary Round:

Wexford v Offaly

Wicklow v Waterford

Round 1:

Wexford/Offaly v Wicklow/Waterford

Carlow v Tipperary

Laois v Westmeath

New York was drawn to the Southern Section at a C.C.C.C meeting earlier in the week and will join at the quarter-final stage.

NORTHERN SECTION

May 28/29

Round 1:

Longford v Fermanagh

Leitrim v Antrim

Sligo v London

Cavan v Down

A competition launch event will take place in Croke Park later today with confirmation of throw-in times and venues being made by C.C.C.C. in due course.

The format of the Tailteann was passed at the 2019 Special Congress but its introduction was postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid.

The winner of the 2022 Tailteann Cup will be guaranteed a place in the 2023 Sam Maguire Competition.

The Championship will be played on a knock-out basis, and organised geographically in Northern and Southern sections, up until the semi-final stage, which will be an open draw between the four Quarter-Finals Winners.

There will be a draw made for each Round.
