Dublin's talismanic midfielder, Brian Fenton, has announced his retirement from inter-county football at the age of 31.
The Raheny club-man made his senior championship debut in 2015 and for the last 10 years has been the outstanding midfielder of his generation.
He won seven All-Ireland medals and 10 Leinster medals and was a dominant figure in the Dublin team that won six All-Irelands in a row from 2015 to 2020.
His individual excellence was recognised with two Footballer of the Year awards and six All-Stars.
His retirement was confirmed by a statement issued by the Dublin GAA statement this morning in which county Chairperson, Michael Seavers, paid tribute to the Raheny man.
"Brian was an integral figure in the incredible success enjoyed by Dublin over the past decade,” said Seavers.
"He is a hugely talented footballer and fan favourite who will forever be considered one of the greatest players to grace the field in a blue jersey.
"We thank Brian for his unwavering commitment to Dublin football.
"We wish him and his family all the best going forward and look forward to welcoming him back to Parnell Park as he continues to play with his club Raheny."
Fenton’s decision to retire from inter-county football is the second heavy blow to Dublin’s championship aspirations for 2025, coming as it does hot on the heels of James McCarthy’s retirement.
