James tried to escape when the firing started in Croke Park, but was caught in a terrible crush
His wife Annie had to identify his body
James Burke lived at 293 Cottages, Windy Arbour on the southern fringe of Dublin and worked for the Terenure Laundry as a van driver.
He left home around two o’clock on the afternoon of Bloody Sunday and headed for Croke Park to see the game between Dublin and Tipperary.
When the firing started, James tried to escape through the exit onto St James’s Avenue at the northeastern corner of the ground but was caught in a terrible crush.
His wife Annie went to Jervis Street hospital to identify him. He was buried the following week at St Nahi’s Cemetery, Dundrum. He was 44 years old.
