Blow for Sligo as David Kelly opts out

By Daragh Ó Conchuir

Sligo's preparations for the Allianz Football League have been rocked further by the news that star forward, David Kelly has withdrawn from the panel for the foreseeable future.

Kelly's withdrawal follows quickly on the heels of Ross O'Donovan's decision to take a break and the ongoing knee problems that have ruled Adrian Marren out for three months.

There are a number of other injuries in the squad as well and while the inspirational Mark Breheny is returning to training this week, Niall Carew's options have been limited.

Writing in his column in the Sligo Champion, Carew insisted that any whispers of a falling out with Kelly or a problem in the camp were wide of the mark, putting Kelly's decision down to the demands of combining inter-county football with his day-do-day commitments.

"By now I'm sure there is a whisper that David Kelly has left the panel, and I'm sure the rumours about a rift in the camp and a row with me has come up for discussion" wrote Carew. "I'm sorry to disappoint but no rift or no row has ever occurred.

"Anyone that knows David Kelly knows he is a gentleman first and foremost. David, for now, has decided to take a break from the senior panel as he has massive commitments outside football.

"Of course, we are hoping to have him back within the next few weeks so we will give him time and do everything we can to get him back on our senior panel."
