Kerry's Eoin Brosnan has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Killarney native announced his decision on Radio Kerry Sport on Monday evening, having waited until the conclusion of the Munster Club Championship before making it public knowledge.

Brosnan's club Dr Crokes won their third consecutive provincial crown on Sunday with victory over Cratloe in the final, and the 33-year-old lined out on the day at centre-half-back.

However, while he remains committed to his club, he has decided to bring an end to his Kerry career, having made his senior debut for the county back in 2000.

"I spoke to Eamonn (Fitzmaurice) briefly the night of the Dublin game and then I rang him a few weeks ago to inform him. I just wanted to wait until we'd finished with Crokes and we got over the line yesterday," Brosnan told the programme.

"I told the selectors as well and I'd like to thank them all for what they've done for me. The time commitment is huge, particularly with three young children and when you're self-employed. I just wouldn't have been able to do it for another year.

"This year there was a changing of the guard, the young players have come on and done well. I think there's a bright future there for Kerry football. I'd a lot of great memories but winning the first All-Ireland in 2004 was really special."

Brosnan captained the Kerry team last season, and won senior All-Ireland titles in 2004, 2006 and 2007. He missed out on the 2009 triumph, and did not play in the 2010 championship. However, he returned in 2011 and has been a regular for Kerry for the last three seasons.

As well as his three All-Ireland medals, Brosnan won seven Munster senior medals in his career. He also has enjoyed huge success with Dr Crokes, and has won four Munster medals with the Killarney club. An All-Ireland club medal still eludes him, but Crokes are still firmly in the hunt for the 2013/2014 prize.

Brosnan's last season in Kerry colours ended when the Kingdom were defeated by Dublin in a thrilling All-Ireland semi-final in August. However, he captained the county to victory over Cork in the Munster final.

Brosnan's decision follows that of Tomás Ó Sé, who announced his retirement from inter-county football in October.
