Corrigan named GAA.ie Football Player of the Week

Footballer of the Week Tomas Corrigan.

Footballer of the Week Tomas Corrigan.

Tomas Corrigan's nine point haul in Fermanagh's Ulster SFC preliminary round win over Antrim has earned him the Football of the Week award.

Corrigan claimed 2,632 votes for his dynamic display as Pete McGrath's side defeated the Saffrons at Brewster Park.

Classy Offaly forward was in second place with 1,397 votes, while Donie Kingston, who starred in Laois' victory over Wicklow was third with 1,211.

Players of the Week are decided based on votes cast by followers of @officialgaa on Twitter, on the Official GAA Facebook Page and on the Official GAA Instagram page

GAA.ie FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  1. Tomas Corrigan (Fermanagh) 2,632 votes - (50 per cent)

  2. Niall McNamee (Offaly)   1,397 votes - (27 per cent)

  3. Donie Kingston (Laois)  1,211 votes - (23 per cent)

Tomás Corrigan showed once again on Sunday why he is one of the most lethal inside-forwards in the game right now as he scored 0-9 of Fermanagh's 1-12 total in their six point win over Antrim.

Two of those points were really clincial finishes from play as he buzzed around the field to great effect, but it is the two points he landed from sideline kicks that will live longest in the memory banks.

Most forwards would not have even attempted to go for the posts from such a prohibitively tight angle, but Corrigan sailed it serenely over the black-spot not once, but twice.

Niall McNamee has been one of the best forwards in the country since he made his debut for the Faithful County in 2003, and if his performance against Longford on Sunday is any barometer, he has plenty left in the tank.

In fact, McNamee looked fitter and sharper than he has for some time, which is probably down to the fact that has had an injury-free run coming into the Championship.

He scored four classy points against Longford, and at times left defenders grasping for thin air with his ability to suddenly shift up through the gears. The way in which he drifted out the field and pulled Offaly's attacking strings from a deeper position was also very impressive.

Wicklow battled bravely against Laois on Saturday, and ultimately the difference between the two teams in the end was the pure class of Donie Kingston.

The big man was held in check for much of the game by the Wicklow defence, but suddenly cut loose in the last ten minutes during which he scored 1-4 of his 1-6 total.

There is no sight more spectacular in Gaelic Football that a powerful forward blasting the ball to the back of the net, and Kingston nearly ripped the rigging with his late piledriver that settled the match once and for all.
