GAA.ie Football Player of the Week Nominations

Tomas Corrigan

Tomas Corrigan

The opening weekend of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship produced a feast of attacking football.

The four matches played produced a whopping total of 13-124 scored, which means there was an average of 41 points registered in each game.

Some of the defending might have been substandard at times, but there was still a lot to admire about the attacking football produced by Laois, Louth, Offaly, and Fermanagh as they got their campaigns off to the best start possible.

Not surprisingly, three forwards make the shortlist for our Football Player of the Week - Fermanagh's Tomás Corrigan, Offaly's Niall McNamee, and Laois' Donie Kingston.

The voting process is simple: retweet the image of your chosen player on the GAA's official Twitter account (@officialgaa) or like their image on the GAA's official Facebook and Instagram pages.

Voting will close at 10am on Tuesday, May 17, at 10am and the winner will be announced on GAA.ie.

Tomás Corrigan (Fermanagh)

Tomás Corrigan showed once again on Sunday why he is one of the most lethal inside-forwards in the game right now as he scored 0-9 of Fermanagh's 1-12 total in their six point win over Antrim.

Two of those points were really clincial finishes from play as he buzzed around the field to great effect, but it is the two points he landed from sideline kicks that will live longest in the memory banks.

Most forwards would not have even attempted to go for the posts from such a prohibitively tight angle, but Corrigan sailed it serenely over the black-spot not once, but twice.

Niall McNamee

Niall McNamee (Offaly)

Niall McNamee has been one of the best forwards in the country since he made his debut for the Faithful County in 2003, and if his performance against Longford on Sunday is any barometer, he has plenty left in the tank.

In fact, McNamee looked fitter and sharper than he has for some time, which is probably down to the fact that has had an injury-free run coming into the Championship.

He scored four classy points against Longford, and at times left defenders grasping for thin air with his ability to suddenly shift up through the gears. The way in which he drifted out the field and pulled Offaly's attacking strings from a deeper position was also very impressive.

Donie Kingston

Donie Kingston (Laois)

Wicklow battled bravely against Laois on Saturday, and ultimately the difference between the two teams in the end was the pure class of Donie Kingston.

The big man was held in check for much of the game by the Wicklow defence, but suddenly cut loose in the last ten minutes during which he scored 1-4 of his 1-6 total.

There is no sight more spectacular in Gaelic Football that a powerful forward blasting the ball to the back of the net, and Kingston nearly ripped the rigging with his late piledriver that settled the match once and for all.
