Tailteann Cup Final

Saturday July 9

Westmeath v Cavan, Croke Park, 3pm

The Tailteann Cup has provided plenty of entertainment and hope with Saturday's eagerly anticipated decider at Croke Park featuring two capable teams.

Mickey Graham's charges defeated Antrim in Ulster before losing to Donegal, but they have impressed in the new competition.

Deserved triumphs over Down, Fermanagh, and Sligo confirmed Cavan's ability with Gearóid McKiernan still a hugely effective performer.

Raymond and Thomas Galligan continue to contribute significantly to the Cavan cause, while Paddy Lynch is a highly regarded footballer also.

Cavan, though, will be aware of Westmeath's potential too as Jack Cooney's team has enjoyed an impressive summer.

Too strong for Longford, Westmeath were subsequently disappointed to lose to Kildare in Leinster.

Despite that reversal, Westmeath responded by overcoming Laois, Carlow, and Offaly in the Tailteann Cup.

Inevitably John Heslin has been prolific for the midlanders, while Ronan O'Toole and Sam McCartan's scoring contributions are other sources of encouragement.

Winning the Allianz Football League Division Four title signalled Cavan's intent, but Westmeath claimed four wins and a draw in Division Three.

Securing silverware at GAA headquarters is the mission for Cavan and Westmeath on Saturday. The recent evidence in the Tailteann Cup suggests this should be an exciting game worth monitoring.
