All-Star midfielder David Burke will lead Galway into action in 2016 after being handed the captaincy by new manager Micheal Donoghue.

Burke, who ironically hails from the same St Thomas club as former manager Anthony Cunningham, will captain Galway for the first time on Sunday week against Cork in Pearse Stadium.

Burke, who was also won an All-Star award in 2012, was vice-captain two years ago when Joe Canning skippered the side. In a reversal of roles Canning will this season serve as vice-captain.

The 26-year old, a school teacher in Loughrea, said it was a huge honour and one he was looking forward to.

“We have plenty of leaders on the team in any event, and plenty of mature lads. And I will be just doing the best that I can for Galway,” he said.

“Getting performances right is the main target, and maybe if you are playing well others will look up to you. So hopefully things will go well. I am really looking forward to it.”

Burke was joined by his five brothers as they guided St Thomas’ to win their first Galway championship in 2012, before they went on to win the All-Ireland club title in a side which was managed by his father John.

Burke won an All-Ireland U21 medal in 2011, a year after winning a league medal with Galway and he also won a Leinster SHC medal in 2012.
