Canada GAA subscribes to the “One Club Model” and has been making quiet but steady strides over the years with the formation of new Clubs in all Codes, the lates being the entry of Vancouver Wolfe Tones Hurling Club in 2023 and the forming of a new Camogie Club by Cú Chulainn GAA in Vancouver. In 2022 we had some 2500 registered members with 28 affiliated Clubs spread across this vast country of Canada. Divisional Sub-Committees are strategically placed in Vancouver, Western Canada, Eastern Canada, and Toronto, the Divisions operate under the leadership and stewardship of elected committees, whose primary role is to organise competitions and ensure that the interests of Divisional affiliated Clubs and members are maintained. The huge geographical distances, incorporating five time zones, present a huge challenge for both Divisional and County committees.
The formation of a new Division in Vancouver in 2022, is testament to the significant development and growth in the city in recent years, with 8 Clubs battling it out to be crowned Divisional Champions.
The Toronto Division with it’s 11 Clubs continues to be very competitive in all codes with some very exciting games on display at Centennial Park the home of the GAA in Toronto.
Calgary Chieftains and Edmonton Wolfe Tones form the Western Division with incredible battles seen every year between these two very competitive Clubs, this year the Division is placing a huge emphasis on the development of youth with Edmonton Wolfe Tones Og forming in 2023, along with Canadian and non-Irish participants.
The Eastern Division consists of 7 Clubs with bragging rights going to the Montreal Shamrocks who have the largest membership in the Division, Montreal is also the oldest Club in Canada being formed well over 75 years ago. The Division is also home to Les Patriotes de Quebec, Canada’s majority French speaking Club who will host the Eastern Divisional Championships in 2023. The Atlantic coast is well represented by the Halifax Gaels with Ottawa Gaels, Eire Og Ottawa Hurling, Na Fianna Katarokwi and Peterborough GAA rounding out the Division.
2022 saw Le Chéile Camogie Club (Toronto Division) win every single competition they entered including the USGAA championship, and the inaugural Canadian National Championship, an incredible accomplishment for this very hard-working Club dedicated to the ongoing development of Camogie in Canada.
The Canadian County committee in conjunction with the Toronto Divisional committee hosted the first ever All Canadian National Championships in Centennial Park Toronto on Labour Day weekend. Teams from across the country made the journey to battle it out to be crowned the inaugural champions in 2022, with the Vancouver Divisional Clubs heading West with most of the hardware. Games were played in all four codes and grades, with a feast of outstanding competitive games served up for the large crowd of spectators in attendance. Our sincere thanks to all the Clubs who participated and congratulations to all the winners.
At the World Games in 2016, Canada GAA sent four Gaelic Football teams to UCD. The Eastern Division was represented by a native Ladies Football team and a native Men’s Football team, while the Western Division showcased the football skills of the Irish-Canadian men and women living in Alberta and BC. The Eastern ladies made it to the finals in Croke Park falling just short to New York in the final. In 2019 Canada GAA was represented at the World Games in Waterford where Toronto had a strong showing in the native Men’s and Ladies football categories. The East entered a native born Men’s Football team and two Ladies Football teams a Hurling team and the infamous Camogie team who made headlines across Ireland with their Shania Twain warm “UP”.
In 2023 the World games will be hosted in Derry with Canada GAA represented by 7 teams of native players, 3 Men’s Football, 2 Ladies Football, 1 Camogie and 1 Hurling to Derry and are hoping to continue to be very competitive on this stage and bring home some silverware.
