Galway footballer, Paul Conroy, was today announced as the GAA’s Irish language Ambassador for 2022 at an event in Croke Park. The Irish language has always been an integral part of Paul’s life and his both parents hail from the Conamara Gaeltacht. He is very much looking forward to his role as Irish language Ambassador.
Paul Conroy, Ambasadóir na Gaeilge CLG: "It is a huge honour for me to be named as the GAA’s Irish language Ambassador for 2022. I was brought up with Irish in Galway city, in Renmore. My both parents are from Conamara and, therefore, Irish is very important to me. I speak Irish every day and I teach Irish. I am really looking forward to this role."
As part of his role, Paul will be supporting and helping promote GAA Irish language schemes and events such as Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta, Cuaille (the Association’s online Irish language magazine), Lá Mór na Gaeilge and the GAAgaeilge Go Games that will be taking place in Croke Park later in the year.
Uachtarán CLG, Larry McCarthy, welcomed the appointment: "I am delighted to announce Galway’s Paul Conroy as the GAA’s Ambasadóir na Gaeilge for 2022. We are always trying to add to our agenda regarding the Irish language and this appointment is the latest step. We wish Paul all the best for the year ahead as Irish language Ambassador."
Paul has been playing with Galway senior footballers since 2008 and has three Connacht Championship medals to his name as well an Allianz League Division 2 winners medal.
He won an Intermediate Championship with his club St. James’ in 2010 as well as Connacht Championship a few months later. He represented Ireland in the Compromise Rules series against Australia in 2013.
The GAA’s Coiste Náisiúnta na Gaeilge is looking forward to working with Paul in the year ahead.
