Mattie Kenny made it two wins from two since taking charge of the Dublin hurlers with a convincing nine-point victory over Offaly in the Walsh Cup at Parnell Park today.
A power-surge midway through the first-half helped Dublin into a 0-11 to 0-7 lead at half-time with attackers like Eamonn Dillon and Donal Burke, and midfielder Cian Boland catching the eye. Dillon missed most of the 2018 season through injury but looks like he’s back at full throttle and should be a big player for the Metropolitans in 2019.
He was to the fore in the second-half also as Dublin pulled away from the Midlanders in convincing fashion. The only off-note on pitch perfect afternoon was the hamstring injury that forced David Treacy from the field of play.
In today’s other Walsh Cup match Carlow scored an impressive eight-point victory over Laois.
Colm Bonnar’s team trailed by 1-13 to 2-9 at the break but their defence hurled up a storm in the second-half to limit Laois to just five points.
With one round of games remaining, Dublin have four points, Laois and Carlow have two each, and Offaly remain pointless. That means if Dublin win their next match against Laois they’ll join Kilkenny, Galway, and Wexford in the semi-finals.
In today’s Kehoe Cup match in Leinster, Antrim defeated Wicklow by 0-21 to 0-13.
Meanwhile, in today’s only Dr. McKenna Cup match, Armagh scored a thumping 25-point victory over a badly out-gunned St. Mary’s University.
First half gals from Jack Grugan (2), Stefan Campbell, Jason Duffy, and Ryan McShane helped the Orchard County into a 5-12 to 0-3 half-time lead which gave them the luxury of taking their foot off the gas in the second-half.
